Research

Health services research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Ohio State

Research Areas

As Strategic Operations and Data Manager for the PH2S program, I support a portfolio of NIH-funded research spanning pain management, opioid decision-making, trauma recovery, substance use disorder prevention, and health equity in emergency care.

Opioids & Pain

Opioid Decision-Making in Emergency Care

Supporting Dr. Punches' K08-funded research on how patients decide whether to use opioids after ED discharge. Instrument development, mixed-methods cohort studies, and screening measure validation.

Funding: NIH/NIDA K08DA049948 (PI: Punches) · 2021–2026

Trauma

Trauma Recovery & Post-Traumatic Outcomes

OSU site coordination for the AURORA Study — a multi-site longitudinal cohort examining biological, psychological, and social predictors of post-traumatic stress, depression, and substance use comorbidity.

Funding: NIH/NIMH U01MH110925 (PI: McLean, UNC) · Site PI: Punches

SUD

Substance Use Disorder Screening & Intervention

ED-based screening protocols, nurse-driven interventions, naloxone distribution evaluation, and statewide policy impact assessments for opioid use disorder prevention.

Funding: SAMHSA, Ohio Department of Health, CDC partnership

Equity

Health Equity in Emergency Care

Examining racial, gender, and socioeconomic disparities in pain assessment, opioid prescribing, and SUD screening using item response theory, qualitative methods, and systematic reviews.

Ongoing: Multiple manuscripts in preparation

Implementation

Health Services Implementation

Translating evidence-based ED interventions into clinical practice, including HIV/HCV screening programs (HIV TESTED Trial), linkage-to-care services, and health promotion.

Program: HealthNow ED-based prevention services

Simulation

Healthcare Operations Modeling

Discrete event simulation of emergency department operations, enrollment processes, and resource allocation using R (simmer) and Python. Bottleneck analysis and capacity planning.
